Arachnids

Orange Araneus species - female

This is a very handsome specimen of quite a rare spider in Britain. I will add the species later, as I have forgotten it! The funny story with this one was that it constructed a beatiful at the back of my garden one Spring, and I watched and photographed it for several months. As it got old (late summer), I checked it every day for when it was going to die, so I could have it identified. One day, I found it hanging lifeless from its web, so I gathered it up and put in on the kitchen bench. I went upstairs to my lab to get a vial and alcohol to store it in, and when I came back down, I was just in time to see my cat eat it.....
