Green Lynx Spider

Green Lynx Spider (Peucetia viridans)

An uncommonly beautiful spider, found throughout the US, generally on flowers waiting for prey. It usually waits in a motionless, cryptic pose for unsuspecting prey to land nearby, but multiple observers have reported actually seeing them jump to catch butterflies in flight. I haven’t seen that myself, but I have seen smaller members of this familiy (Oxyopidae) certainly jump many times their body length, so it definitely is possible. Notice the spines on the legs, and the taxonomic formation of the eyes.
